The Laboratory on Social and Affective Neuroscience, in collaboration with Katie McLaughlin at University of Oregon and Steven Kasparek at UCSF, has published new research in Research on Child & Adolescent Psychopathology finding that reduced amygdala volume predicts worsening callous-unemotional traits in children and adolescents over a period of 18 months. We found that experiencing maltreatment also predicts worsening callous-unemotional traits. Although prior cross-sectional research suggested that maltreatment may worsen callous-unemotional traits through its effects on the amygdala, our research found this was not the case, but that these two risk factors are independent.
