Research on the Web

Using the Psychology Guide

1. Go to Library.georgetown.edu
2. Click on the "databases" tab
3. Scroll down and click on "psychology"

What Does Psychology Guide do for me?

- Provides many starting places for your research
- Shows references available at Lauinger
- Provides links to databases, organizations, and other websites of interest

How should I start?

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias may provide a useful place to begin your search for a topic. The Psychology Guide lists names and call numbers and shows which are available in Lauinger (there will be a blue book icon).

PsycInfo

- A database of psychology-related articles
- Provides full citations, abstracts of articles, and links to the full text when available
- In some cases, Georgetown will have the journal article in the stacks. Otherwise, you have to go through the Library Constortium or ILL (see the circulation desk for help with that)
- To use PsycInfo, click on the "advanced" tab and type in key words that you're looking for. You can also specify where you'd like those terms to be located--in the abstract, anywhere in the text, etc.

Using "Suggest": on the search pages, type in a word or phrase and click "suggest". This will give you a thesaurus of other terms used in place of this term, and can help you locate articles. Simply check boxes to narrow your search.

Search Results: After you click "search", PsycInfo will come back with all the journal articles it could find. The titles with a red arch to the left are in journals that are in the library. To view the abstract, click on the "complete record" link. To save specific articles, check the box to the left and click on either the "print" "save" or "email" icons on the right side of the screen.

The "Complete Record" page:

- Authors: link to other articles by same authors
- Source: link to other articles in the same journal
- URL_Journal: link to the journal's homepage
- Digital Object Identifier: Link to full text article (only available when GU subscribes)
- Key Concepts: Links to related articles
- Major Desriptors: Links to related articles

PubMed: The National Library of Medicine

- Medically-oriented journals
- Easy to access off-campus: just go to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/

PubMed: Search Screen

From the Psychology tab on the library webpage, scroll down and click on "Pub Med"

Enter author name (Last name initials, e.g. smith jc." OR enter word or phrase
You can set limits, e.g. certain years or certain journals.

In your search results, click on an underlined author to get the full record of the article.

If you're accessing this on campus, and the library subscribes to the journal, you can click the "full text" link to access the complete article.
