Statement of Academic, Professional, and Personal Goals

IMPORTANT!

The 500-word statement of academic, professional, and personal goals should:

(a) include a discussion of how graduate school in Developmental Science will help you to achieve these goals;

(b) specify your interest in one of the two areas of concentration;

(c) indicate which faculty member/s you would want to work with and how you see their interests meshing with yours. This latter information is very important because the fit between student and faculty research interests is a key component in admissions decisions.

Please identify your name, program to which you are applying, term of application, U.S. social security number (if applicable), and birthdate on your submitted statement.

Writing Sample

Typically chosen from your undergraduate work, your writing sample should best reflect your abilities and interests as they relate to your chosen concentration in the PhD program.

International Applicants

All applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university in another country where English is the primary language of instruction.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

All other non-native speakers must achieve a minimum score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based tests) or minimum score of 100 (internet-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Many departments and programs require submission of a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based tests) or higher. This test should be taken in time to allow the results to be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the appropriate application deadline. For information concerning the time and place where the TOEFL will be given, applicants should contact:

The Educational Testing Service (ETS):  www.ets.org
The TOEFL Examination:  www.toefl.org
